Floatation :
Some materials float on the water where as other sink. Thsi porperty ofthe material to float on water is called as floatation. Different materials float or sink based on there densities. If you drop nail in water, it will sink. But a piece of wood will float on the water. If you weigh equal volumes of iron, water and wood, you will find that iron is the heaviest and wood is the lightest. The mass per unit volume of a substance is known as density. A substance which is denser than water will sink in water. A substance which is less dense than water will float on water.
Matter can be classified on the basis of whether it floats or sinks in water, that is, on the basis of whether its density is less than or more than that of water.
